Don Vaughn

February 3, 1939-February 16, 2022

It is with great sadness that we share with everyone that Don Vaughn, our beloved volunteer at the Midtown clinic, died on February 16′. Mr. Don, as he was known by most, was a faithful volunteer with West for the last 11 years, amassing over 20,000 hours of volunteer work. Because of his dedicated service, Mr. Don received several “Volunteer of the Year” awards from West and eventually was given a “Lifetime Achievement” award. He was committed to the patients at our Midtown clinic and was seen daily passing out snacks, bringing coffee and water, and visiting with our patients in the infusion room. He often showed up very early, even before the staff at times, and was ready to get things moving before the patients arrived. He loved West Cancer Center, as he said in an interview in 2019, and he noted that our staff made him feel so special, like he was just important as they were. While he was a bit of a stubborn character and often set in his ways, Mr. Don’s gentle presence and listening ear were a gift to all who walked through the doors at our Midtown clinic. He leaves behind a twin brother, David, and the many patients and staff who cared for him deeply. We give thanks for the life of Mr. Don and for his dedicated service to the patients of West Cancer Center.

In honor of Mr. Don, flowers will be placed at the front desk of the Regional One Cancer Center Midtown clinic. Next to the flowers will be a box and cards where patients and staff can leave messages of gratitude, or special stories, to share with his brother. If you would like to make a donation in his honor, we recommend that you donate snacks or blankets for our volunteers to give to patients (Mr. Don’s favorites were the peanut butter crackers). If you want to make a monetary donation in his honor, we ask that you donate to the West Cancer Foundation.

Please take a moment to watch an interview we held with Don in 2019.
