About Me
Dr. Richard Gilmore is a board-certified breast surgical oncologist at Margaret West Comprehensive Breast Center/West Cancer Center in Germantown, Tennessee. He completed his Breast Surgical Oncology Fellowship at West in 2021, following a General Surgery Residency and Internship at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He earned his M.D. from Emory University School of Medicine, where he also served as a teaching assistant and student instructor across multiple educational initiatives. He received his undergraduate degree from The University of Virginia, where he majored in Biology, and he is originally from Central Virginia. Dr. Gilmore also earned an MBA from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, further strengthening his expertise in healthcare innovation, leadership, and strategy.
Dr. Gilmore brings a robust academic and clinical background, with extensive research in breast surgical oncology. His work has been published in leading journals such as Annals of Surgical Oncology, The British Medical Journal, and The Journal for the American College of Surgery, and he has contributed chapters to surgical textbooks including Cameron and Cameron’s Current Surgical Therapy and Breast Diseases in Pregnancy and Lactation.
He has presented at multiple national conferences including the American Society of Breast Surgeons, The American College of Surgeons Clinical Congress, and the Southeastern Surgical Congress. His research and professional interests focus on cancer prevention, cancer early detection, lifestyle medicine, patient education, patient satisfaction, and patient-reported outcomes.
Dr. Gilmore is deeply committed to education and community service, having mentored medical students, led surgical skills workshops and anatomy labs, and volunteered with organizations such as Project Open Hand, the Good Samaritan Clinic, and the Free Clinic of Central Virginia. His dedication to advancing surgical care, patient outcomes, and preventative health models makes him a valued member of the West Cancer Center team.
