Michael Doherty, MD

Michael Doherty, MD, serves as Director of Interventional Radiology at West Cancer Center & Research Institute, bringing nearly two decades of clinical experience and expertise in advanced, minimally invasive procedures.

Dr. Doherty leads West’s Interventional Radiology program, providing innovative, image-guided treatments for both cancer and non-cancer conditions. His expertise includes advanced embolization procedures designed to target the source of pain or disease in a minimally invasive way. For many patients, these

procedures offer an alternative to more invasive treatments, with benefits that may include less discomfort, faster recovery times, improved function, and a quicker return to everyday activities.

Prior to West, Dr. Doherty served as Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Radiology at Michigan State University and practiced with Jackson Radiology Associates in Jackson, Tennessee. He also held leadership positions with Advanced Radiology Services in Grand Rapids, Michigan, including serving on the Board of Directors and as Section Chief of Interventional Radiology.

Dr. Doherty earned his Doctor of Medicine from Indiana University School of Medicine and his Bachelor of Science in Biology from Hillsdale College. He completed training in General Surgery and Diagnostic Radiology, followed by a fellowship in Vascular and Interventional Radiology at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine. He is board-certified by the American Board of Radiology.

Throughout his career, Dr. Doherty has been recognized for excellence in clinical care and medical education, receiving multiple “Top Doctors” honors from Grand Rapids Magazine and the Teacher of the Year award from the Grand Rapids Medical Education Consortium. He is an active member of several professional organizations, including the American College of Radiology, Society of Interventional Radiology, American Roentgen Ray Society, and American Society of Clinical Oncology.

Through his leadership at West, Dr. Doherty provides patients with access to advanced, minimally invasive treatment options focused on managing disease, reducing pain, improving function, and enhancing quality of life.
