Prostatic Artery Embolization (PAE) is a minimally invasive treatment option for men experiencing moderate to severe lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a noncancerous enlargement of the prostate gland. This condition can significantly impact quality of life, causing symptoms such as difficulty urinating, frequent urination, or urinary retention.

HOW DOES PAE WORK:

PAE involves blocking the blood supply to the prostate using tiny particles, which reduces its size and relieves symptoms. The procedure is guided by advanced imaging techniques to ensure precision and safety.

WHAT IS EMBOLIZATION:

Embolization is a technique where your Interventional Radiologist uses tiny particles or coils to block certain blood vessels.

BENEFITS OF PAE:

  • Minimally Invasive: PAE is performed through a small incision, avoiding the need for major surgery.
  • Outpatient Procedure: Most patients can return home the same day.
  • Preserves Function: PAE is an option for men who wish to preserve erectile and ejaculatory function.
  • Effective Relief: The procedure reduces prostate size, improves urinary symptoms, and enhances quality of life.
  • Low Risk of Complications: PAE has a favorable safety profile with fewer side effects compared to traditional surgical options.

THE PROCEDURE:

  • You will receive a thorough evaluation, including imaging tests (ultrasound, MRI, or CT), to assess your condition and plan the treatment.
  • A small catheter is inserted into an artery by your Interventional Radiologist, typically in the wrist or groin, to deliver the particles to the prostate.

RECOVERY:

  • Most patients experience symptom improvement within weeks. Follow-up appointments will monitor your progress.
  • Some patients may experience mild side effects such as temporary pain, urinary discomfort, or mild bleeding. Serious complications are rare.

IDEAL PATIENTS:

PAE is recommended for men with:

  • BPH and symptoms that do not respond to medication.
  • Intolerance to or refusal of surgery.
  • Urinary retention requiring a catheter.
  • Hematuria (blood in urine) caused by the prostate.
  • Large prostate glands, including those over 80 cm³.

WHY CHOOSE PAE:

PAE offers a modern, effective alternative to traditional surgical treatments like transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP). It is particularly suitable for men seeking a less invasive option with a quicker recovery time.
