Dr. Benton Wheeler has been a member of the West team since 1993. He is board certified in Oncology and holds medical licenses in Tennessee, Mississippi, Arkansas, Kentucky, and Indiana. Dr. Wheeler sees patients in our Southaven and Midtown offices. Cancer patients have taught Dr. Wheeler that “life is too short and you need to live now.” In turn, he helps his patients understand that, unlike a heart attack or stroke that can occur without warning, cancer can provide patients and families some real time together for closeness and reflection. Along with that opportunity come treatment advances that offer great relief and hope. Dr. Wheeler has two children that occupy much of his spare time. He enjoyed serving as a Cub Scout Leader. A former guitar player, he now focuses his musical talent on the piano. He is a serious photographer who in the early days enjoyed the title of “The West Clinic’s Unofficial Photographer.” Dr. Wheeler is a long-distance runner today. He wasn’t always into running long distances – until he started treating a patient who ran marathons. The patient invited him on a run, and it was astonishing to Dr. Wheeler that he could not keep pace with a man who was in the middle of chemotherapy. Patients mean something to Dr. Wheeler, and he wants to mean something to them. By knowing their families, passions and pursuits, he feels he can treat patients better. And with the new partnership that is the West Cancer Center, he can see even greater opportunities to share meaningful moments with the people he treats. “The one thing we want patients to take away is that we care about them. And that we are going to get through this together.”
